The trucking industry is always coming up with new ideas, this time around it’s some smart tie downs. Increasing emphasis on safety when loading and unloading a trailer is leading to more innovations in the load restraint area and Transking’s Lindsay King had his latest smart idea on show at the MEGATRANS2018 event earlier this year.
The problem is a common one, getting a ratchet strap across the top of a load on a curtainsider, without compromising safety by either climbing up the side of a load, getting a lift from a fork lift or throwing a metal strap through a narrow gap with no idea whether there is someone on the far side of the trailer.
The system is simple, with a track fixed to the trailer roof, on which is a strap carrier which can be pulled from side to side. A custom-designed pole lifts the end of the strap onto the carrier. The pole is then used pull the carrier to the far side of the trailer, where it can be lifted down with the pole and fixed to the combing rail.
Then it is simply a matter of returning to the strap winch and tightening the strap in the correct position. Tightening the strap also involves innovation with a new winch and custom designed winding handle also on display at the show in Melbourne.
This new system means any driver can tie down their load inside a curtain sided trailer, strapping it securely, while never leaving the ground or throwing metal catches into the unknown.
