“From July 1 changes were made to the notice to allow roadtrains with eligible tri-axle dollies to operate at full axle group mass limits where they are fitted with certified road friendly suspension,” RMS director customer and compliance, Peter Wells explained. “Previously, road trains operating in New South Wales with tri-axle converter dollies were not permitted the full sum of axle group mass limits which had the effect of indirectly limiting the mass limits on these vehicles.
“Eligible road train vehicles were required to have a longer minimum distance between axle groups of the leading semi-trailer and the converter dolly tri-axle group with the increased mass limits. The minimum axle spacing aims to reduce concerns about the effects of increased mass limits on bridges.
“Further consultation with the heavy vehicle industry identified that certain types of roadtrains, for example those with tipping trailers or built to carry livestock, may not be able to meet the requirement under the notice in relation to the minimum distance between adjacent axle groups.
“A graduated table of axle group spacings and adjacent axle group mass limits is included in the notice and has been developed to help operators obtain the benefits of increased mass limits for eligible tri-axle dollies without posing any additional risk to bridges,” Wells announced.
