Twenty-Five Years in Automatics

After twenty-five years, a strong service mentality is serving, Allison distributor, Heavy Automatics well as they look forward to developing the business further.

Truck Transmission specialists, Heavy Automatics, is celebrating 25 years of operation in 2016, having evolved from the vision of owners Ron Neville and Claude Dalese, which was to provide highly-trained and motivated staff committed to outstanding customer support in transmission servicing.

Twenty-Five Years in Automatics

The two founders of the business were mechanics by trade and had worked in environments where customer service wasn’t a priority. They decided tp set up a business with the mantra of service, service and service at its core. Within the company they talk about employees getting a ‘Heavy Automatics Injection’ ensuring they understand the importance of the best customer service and ‘putting smiles on people’s faces’.

Heavy Automatics expanded from its initial base in Adelaide, and now has a network of five branches and 10 service dealers around Australia with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, along with an extensive parts warehouse in Adelaide. With widespread coverage across Australia, there is not only someone to answer the phone, but also a respected leader in the field of heavy-vehicle transmission sales, service and repair nearby – should an issue or need arise.

With more than 80 employees, Heavy Automatics provides service and technical solutions to virtually all of Australia’s leading OEM truck manufacturers, while its team of factory-trained technicians specialised in using the latest diagnostic equipment, overhauling, servicing and repairing with a 24/7 breakdown service to help minimise downtime. Heavy Automatics also reconditions transmissions with guaranteed quality and offers Allison-specific courses to customer groups using accredited trainers and engineers.

In 2008, Allison had recognised the company’s work and invited the business to become a service provider for the automatic transmissions supplier. They had recognised a similar brand ethos in the Heavy Automatics business to their own.

Becoming a distributor for Allison led to further developments, as the business developed relationships with the truck manufacturers. In 2009, this led to a long term partnership with Iveco Trucks, with Heavy Automatics supplying and fitting automatics in the truck maker’s product. This relationship has led to Heavy Automatics being awarded the ‘Supplier of the Year’ gong on two occasions.

The relationships with OEMs has seen the company becoming engaged in product development alongside a number of brands. In recent years, this has led to a situation where Heavy Automatics teams are working side by side with Kenworth’s development teams. There is also a strong relationship developing with Isuzu, as the proportion of Japanese trucks fitted with Allison transmissions continues to increase.

“Because of the company’s long term commitment, Heavy Automatics has engaged in intensive technical training for its staff, giving them intimate knowledge of Allison transmissions,” says Robert Cavagnino, Australian Sales Manager for Allison. “Heavy Automatics has coupled that technical know-how with a large inventory and nationwide reach, minimising downtown and maximising productivity for Australian fleets.”
