Today, the passing of Terry Nolan has been announced. Terry, and his wife Daph, were instrumental in many developments in the trucking industry, over the years, as the owners of Nolans Interstate Transport.
Terry was also a well known industry personality, willing to speak his mind when the occasion warranted it or enable others to get on with the task when needed. A reformed character, his company has been at the forefront of a number of safety initiatives. Much of the scheme today known as Trucksafe was developed in the Nolan’s Interstate workshop at Gatton in Queensland. Nolan’s took a major role in the first fatigue management trials.
The company Terry ran has been in existence for over 100 years, transforming from Hawck’s Carrying Co. to Hawck Nolan and later to Nolan’s Interstate. The company had developed with the the local Lockyer Valley economy and when the area became a major horticultural centre, Nolan’s grew to handle the freight task..
A a schoolboy, Terry would arrive home in the afternoon, jump into a truck and take it out to the paddock to load potatoes by hand. It was not until many years later,Terry’s father, Mick, made the sudden announcement he was retiring, that he considered taking over the small fleet of B 61 Macks.
Terry’s takeover coincided with an explosion in the amount of interstate freight needing to be moved. Curtain siders and refrigeration units were replacing the flat top trailers of the past. Fresh fruit and vegetable transport was becoming a sophisticated business.
This grew into the business we know today as Nolan’s Interstate, running well over 100 trucks and servicing major fresh produce customers all over Australia.
Many in the industry will mourn Terry’s passing, including us here at Diesel News. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.
